Heroes: A Bigger Picture

With Volume 3 of Heroes coming up in just under a month’s time, and the recent revelation of the title of this Season’s second volume i.e. Volume 4 as ‘Fugitives’, I began to think of how Heroes has evolved even in its short life two seasons.
The plotline of Heroes has been, as far as I think, constantly evolving. I say this in light of the fact that a lot of things that were revealed by the creators about the direction of the show have changed. No program can forgo change entirely, audience reaction, current events, etc all play a part in the development of the story.
Heroes Season 1 was a breakthrough, it appealed to a mass audience instantly. Season 2 however did not. I still believe that season 2 was superior in many respects to season 1, better acting, better plot, better dialogue… everything. If you see the extended pilot episode of heroes, you see many scenes and plot lines that would have given heroes an entirely different story in its first season.
While Season 1 was still airing, the creators had said that heroes would have a very dynamic cast; each season would mostly have different characters. People however fell in love with the characters, and thus Season 2 was written ‘around’ them. I don’t know what direction the story would have taken if they had kept a varying cast, but based on the fact that rumours about Hiro ending up in the past were circulating a long time before season 2, I am inclined to believe that season 2 would have focused mostly on Hiro in the past, and his encounter with Kensai. I think the show would have then explored more into the source of powers.
People complained that season 2 did not have convincing romances, and that the threat that the world faced was revealed a little too late. The fact that the story was cut off due to the strike did not help. The shows format was changed again, the complaints of the audience would be taken into account.
Volume 3 had till then been titled ‘Exodus’. Now exodus comes from the ‘Book of Exodus’ which tells about the escape from slavery of the people under Moses. Exodus means ‘A journey by a large group to escape from a hostile environment’. Taking this into consideration I think season 2 would have dealt with the revelation of super powers in individuals, and the reaction of people. I guess the villain in this case would have been a much larger general populace. This is just what I think of course.
The new path that Volume 3 takes as ‘Villains’ is one in which we see the dual sides of everyone, as both hero and villain. Which mean not only that you might see Peter or Claire as a villain, but also Sylar as a hero! ||SPOILER — In fact, I read at a spoiler site that Sylar is shown in the future as a normal guy, with a son named… guess….. Noah! –END SPOILER||.
While many people were wondering or hoping that the original story arc planned for exodus would come up in a later season, it seems it won’t be this season.
So what happened to the bigger picture of heroes?
Does Heroes even have a bigger multi season storyline (anymore), or are they just taking it wherever audience demand takes it?
Even in the beginning Heroes was said to have a storyline for five seasons, and recently one of the people involved in heroes made a comment with a reference to season 7! With Heroes the concept of seasons is a little different, so did they mean 5 volumes or 5 seasons? Does season 7 mean the 7th year of the show, or the 7th volume (which could come next season if they plan to have 2 volumes again).
Many facts points to the fact that heroes may indeed still have a bigger story, such as:

  • Even if the story from the extended pilot had been developed, the basic plot would still have been the same. That New York has a nuclear threat.
  • Rumours that Hiro adventures in the past in the second season were present even before the creators decided to keep the old characters.
  • Volume 3 Villains will have ||SPOILER – a disturbing image of the future brought about due to the revelation of super powered peoples, and a substance that induces powers in ordinary humans — END SPOILER||. This could be just be a different take on the exodus storyline.
  • Volume 4 ‘Fugitives’ could also refer to exodus. Meaning that after the exodus villains, people with powers are now fugitives. (Or merely that the villains who escape in Volume 3 are fugitives! I mean 13 episodes and 13 villains, they can’t finish them all up especially since the break out probably won’t even happen in ep1 or even 2). Meaning Volume 3 and 4 could be an extended Exodus storyline.

So what do you think? Is Heroes still on track? Does it even matter? It hasn’t disappointed me yet…

Dent is Dead!!!

Yes… its official now!

The script of the movie The Dark Knight has been released, and in the ending scene (pg 163 in the document) the line reads:

Dent lies in the bottom of the hole, his neck broken. DEAD.

I was hoping this would not be the case… but still… there is still hope…
First of all this refers to Dent… a fine point would be that he is now two-face who might not be dead…. (even thoughhe is refered to as Dent all throughout the script)
Secondly it just says so in the script… the ending is still open… they have not confirmed his death..
If you are thinking, that a memorial is more than enough as a confirmation of his death, think carefully… What if Dent were not dead? Batman sacrifices his honor to preserve that of Dent… they couldnt have Dent walking about killing people… that would be counterproductive ;-) .. So even if Dent survived… a public memorial, and a private imprisonment would  be the only course…

So here’s the script read for yourself… and tell me what YOU think…

Cher as Catwoman

Although there have been a lot of unsubstantiated rumors about the direction of the third movie of the new Batman series…. This one sounds surprising enough to actually be true…

The 62 year old oscar winning actress seems to be Nolans first choice for catwoman! Well.. I can’t DARE complain… I mean.. when Heath Ledger was revealed as the choice for playing Joker, everyone was like… “whoha! $@# the guy who played the gay coyboy dude?” but we had some hope… but mostly faith after seeing the first film… but now having seen the second one.. I dont think anyonw has a smidgen of doubt that… Ledger was the perfect choice… that Nolan knows what he is doing…

In any case.. best not put too much weight into any such rumors… Only time will tell… But with probabily still 3 years to wait… it seems like tooo much time!

Reboot Fever

Old is Gold once again it seems…
Or maybe hollywood is just running out of ideas… Either case reboots seem to be the fashion these days… Missed a movie recently? Dont worry… you can catch the reboot five years later… it’ll probabiloy be better anyway!

So is a good thing? One can argue that reboots are just a way to make money out of established concepts. I guess is depends on ones perspective…

Anyway… I am all for reboots… A loot of old movies, TV Series, and Books are quite dated now.. Many havent aged well…
If you look as some old science fiction films, book and tv series, they are almost funny now.. with new technology, the old classics sometimes seem more a burden to watch than anything… I mean there are quite a few films I have seen just because they are renown, but have found them unspectacular…
Simply makeing a remake can suffice if the only thing that has changed is the very technology used in making the film… elsewise a reboot is the way to go…
Can you really complain? Especially after seeing ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight’…
Firstly… you should know the difference between a reboot and a remake, and a prequel / sequel…
Prequels / sequels are basically continuations of the set timeline, they are consistent with the established canon, they merely serve to further the continuity of the story forward or backward…
Remakes involve no reinvisioning… the story is taken as is and is just retold with newer technology
(Most of bollywood’s copy-paste efforts are merely remakes, as there is not much difference in story…)
Reboots basicaly chuck all the previoulsy developed story out the window and start anew…

So what are the reboots you may have seen recently…

  • In Movies:
    • Batman Begins (reboot the batman film series)
    • Casino Royale (reboots the James Bond series)
    • The Incredible Hulk (reboot of Hulk…)
    • Mortal Kombat: Devestation (set for a 2010 release… this movie will be a reboot of the previous duology)
    • Planet of the Apes
    • The Pink Panther
    • King Kong (I think)
    • RoboCop (recently planned)
    • Superman (recently planned)
    • Transformers
  • In TV:
    • Battlestar Galactica (1987 and 2003 version)
    • Flash Gordon (2007 version is a reboot of previous version)
    • Bionic Woman  (again new 2007 version canceled after 9 eps!)
    • He-Man (new 2002 or something tv cartoon series)
    • X-Men Evolution (reboot of old animated series, shows the x-men in their younger days)
    • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003 series is a less cartoony reboot of earlier series)

That’s not all… Even things like games are prone to reboots… With a reboot of Prince of Persia coming up… and Lara Crowft – Tomb Raider: Legends is a reboot of that game franchise…

If you see the list you will notice that most of the reboots that I have listed have actually been  superior to their original form…
I guess this is becase, times change and people have a different view of things than that of even 10 years ago… Stories that made sense earlier might be pointless now…
I believe that reboots in a way require more effort in making that original movies… because now you have a concept to live up to… Now there is a story that needs to be retold… but with enough similarities to the old form to still be considered a part of it, yet updated sufficiently that it seems fresh, and makes sense to today’s audience…
There are many old stories to be told.. they just need to be polished to make them more suitable for todays world…
And even though people will be divided in opinion about most of the movies and tv shows listed above… Who is their right minds would regret Batman Begins and The Dark Knight? Who would complain about BattleStar Galactica?
So what I say is… Keep is coming… Becasue even if there is only one movie.. or tv show in a decade or two that parallels BSG or The Dark Knight…. It will be worth it!…

You may have noticed that I havent been very active lately…

If you were waiting for an explation… keep waiting… i’m looking for one myself…

Any way.. time passes whether we notice it or not… so here’s whats been UP… like recently…

  • Bond 22: Quantum of Solace.. has been delayed… by 1 week… it probably wont make a speck of difference but what the hell… I thought I might as well report it.. this is due to the delay in HP 6… So Bond 22 now comes out on November 14th.
  • A reboot of Superman has been planned… A loot of movies are getting the (re)boot these days! I mean.. James Bond, Star Trek, Superman… and even more are in planning… With superman they intend to go the way of ‘The Dark Knight’… Making it more dark and gritty… Even besides reboots, movies seem to be going the Noir way a lot these days… any more about that later…
